Recognising and Promoting an Active Role for Māori – Advanced Programme. Course No 553

A three-day workshop for union delegates, workplace leaders and key union members designed to broaden their skills and knowledge for achieving greater Māori participation in their union. This programme also informs how Māori can contribute more to meeting the principle object of the ERA 2000 and how they can make a unique contribution to raising workplace productivity.

Problem Solving Around Occupational Health Issues: An Industry Approach. Course No 541

A one-day workshop targeting Health and Safety Representatives, EPMU shop stewards, union delegates, workplace leaders and other people working in the plastics and other industries, including managers and supervisors, who have an interest in Health and Safety.
The course has the following three broad aims

  • To raise the awareness of health hazards in industries;
  • To develop strategies for controlling these hazards; and
  • To equip participants to solve these issues in a way that enhances and develops productive workplace relationships.

This is approved for ERE leave purposes, and is approved for H&S training leave purposes for H&S representatives who have completed at least Stage 1 H&S Representative training.

Approved under section 72 of the Employment Relations Act, and under section 19G of the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

Building Financial Literacy: A Union Guide Course No 505

A two day advanced course for union officials and experienced delegates and other workplace leaders that aims to deepen their understanding of accounting and financial reporting and practices – including how to analyse and interpret information and the limitations of financial reports.

This course will be useful for developing a better understanding of the financial well-being of companies for use in a collective bargaining context.

Workplace Leaders Forum Course No 530

The target group for this course are newly elected EPMU workplace delegates. Delegates may be professional, trades or production workers. This course is designed to use practical and participative methods to ensure that literacy levels are not a barrier to learning.

By the end of this one-day course the course participants should:

  • Have an understanding of the EPMU’s democratic structure, function and key systems, and;
  • Be able to understand the key principles and object of the Employment Relations Act 2000, and;
  • Have an introduction to how to organise in the workplace.

Foundation Union Skills Workshop

A workshop for newly elected union delegates, other workplace representatives and leaders and members. The programme is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the role and function of various union representatives, learn more about the ERA 2000 and broader legal environment, and develop basic problem solving tools. The workshop can be facilitated flexibly as a full one day programme, as two half day courses or as four modules up to three hours each.

Building Communication Networks

This is a 4 hour course intended for union members who have a role in an industry or enterprise based communication network. By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the structures and processes of a communications network within a particular industry
  • Have developed skills around building and maintaining the communications network
  • Have identified the issues that arise for them as members in the communications network
Have identified members concerns and discussed ways of addressing them.

The course is intended to develop participant’s understanding of their roles within the union; equip participants with skills for more effective involvement in the union’s democratic structures; and develop participants understanding of the EPMU’s industry bargaining and development strategies and members roles in these areas.

Getting Organised

A two-day workshop targeting EPMU shop stewards, delegates and other workplace leaders who have completed at least two preceding core delegate skills workshops.
The workshop aims:

  • To further develop delegates’ skills, knowledge and understanding on how to build union organisation in their workplace
  • To develop a better understanding of the EPMU’s strategic industry-based approach to union organising
To develop a better understanding of  the legal backdrop for union organising – particularly in relation to building collective organisation, as established by the Employment Relations Act and its amendments

Getting Organised for Bargaining

This workshop aims for delegates to:

  • better understand the legal framework that underpins the collective bargaining process
  • gain a deeper understanding of the EPMU’s strategic approach to collective bargaining
gain the skills and knowledge to effectively organise in preparation for collective bargaining

Organising Around Health and Safety

A one-day workshop for any EPMU delegate and/or member who has a strong interest in and/or is active in workplace health and safety. Ideally, delegates and members will come from workplaces where there is an elected Health and Safety Representative operating on site.

The workshop aims:

  • To provide participants with the skills and knowledge to undertake effective organising in their workplaces around health and safety
  • To develop strategies to enhance the Union’s contribution to more effective management of health of safety in the workplace

Getting Up-skilled for the job
Course No: 475

A two-day workshop aimed at relatively new delegates of the union, who have ideally completed the EPMU Foundation workshop and been in their role for at least three months.
This two day workshop aims:

  • To learn more about the key communication skills required for the delegate’s role
  • To provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to be more effective problem solvers
  • To improve delegates’ recruitment skills and techniques
  • To understand more about the role played by the EPMU at the workplace, industry and community levels
To encourage delegates to take up the opportunity to link their learning to the national qualifications framework

Union Learning Workshop

A one day workshop for delegates, workplace leaders and reps, and union members.

The programme draws on participants’ learning experiences and aims to develop their understanding of adult and union education with a view to working towards more effective learning outcomes for themselves and others.

The workshop can be facilitated flexibly, taking the form of a full one day programme, two half day courses or as four modules up to three hours each.

This course is also approved for use by unions affiliated to NZCTU.
