2009/10 Christmas and New Year holidays

Employees who normally work Monday to Friday

Mary normally works Monday to Friday.

This year Christmas Day falls on a Friday therefore Mary would be entitled to a paid day off on that day.

This year Boxing Day falls on a Saturday which is not a day Mary would work. Therefore, her public holiday will be observed on the following Monday. She will be entitled to a paid day off on the Monday.

The rate at which Mary would be paid is the relevant daily pay which is the amount she would have received had she been at work.

If Mary, who usually works Monday to Friday, was required to work on Christmas Day however, she would be paid at her normal rate for the hours she worked plus half as much again and would be entitled to an alternate holiday.

This diagram shows Mary’s working pattern, when public holidays fall on and how public holidays are transferred from Saturday to Monday. click image for larger copy
